SummerU 2010 Daily - Day V - Hiking & Cabaret

The BureauThe fifth day of the Summer University started early for the EDS bureau, who went in session for the first official bureau meeting of the working year. The first and most important point on the agenda was appointing new co-chairmen for EDS’ three permanent working groups.

After the bureau meeting EDS was honored by the presence Mr. Tomáš Strážay from the Slovak Foreign Policy Association. Mr. Strážay gave the Summer University participants a new understanding of the long history of ethnic diversity in Slovakia, ranging from Austro-Hungarian times until today.

Hiking tripAfter Mr. Strážay left, the discussions amoung the EDS activists continued during the whole bus ride to Terchova, where the activists were given the opportunity to learn more about Slovak Folklore. After a short presentation the delegates were taken for a walk in the mountains of Žilina before returning to the Hotel so they could get ready for the Gala Dinner and perhaps the highlight of the Summer University; The EDS Cabaret!

Before the cabaret could begin, EDS was greeted by one of the supporters of the summer university; Mr. Hans-F. von Solemacher, Chairman of the Hanns Seidel Foundation in Slovakia. Mr. Solemacher finally invited EDS to visit the Hanns Seidel youth training centre in eastern Slovakia.

Gala dinnerThe Cabaret was an opportunity for the delegates to prove to their colleagues that they not only were talented politicians, but also talented singers, dancers and actors. The sketches ranged from the Austrian delegation singing their own rewritten version of the song “I will follow him” from the movie “Sister Act” – to a traditional dance and song presented by a joint Romanian-Moldovan delegation.

All in all it was another great day in under the sun in magnificent Žilina.
