After five years (Council Meeting in 2005 ), the European Democrat Students are back to Slovakia. The participants had the opportunity to discover Bratislava before the transfer to Zilina. On Monday morning, the hosting organisation ODM guided us in the National Parliament where we gained insight in the particular parlamentarian history of Slovakia, from the Autrian-hungarian monarchy through Czechoslovakia to Slovakia.
Today, all Visegrad countries are governed by center-right governments. The flat tax introduced in 2005 by a conservative government was not touched by the socialist Prime Minister and Slovakia is competitive today. Mister Ivan Stefanec insisted about the importance of not harmonising everything in Europe since competition gives the right impulse. The flat tax system in now present in different EU countries. We wished him good luck for the next municipal elections where he will be candidate for mayor in Bratislava.
EDS XXXIV EDS Summer University was officially opened on 19th of July, 2010. More than 100 people, coming from different European countries gathered in Žilina and were addressed by mayor of Žilina Mr. Ivan Harman.
The topic of Mr. Harman was „Centre right unity overcoming nationalism” and among other issues he underlined that contribution of centre-right youth is essential to ensure strengthening of tolerance, democracy and human rights in this region and whole Europe. Although generation, represented by EDS did not feel the years under iron curtain directly, EDS will shape tomorrow`s Europe for and will implement the values of centre right policy.To conclude his speech Mr. Harman wished EDS to have fruitful meeting and pleasant stay in Žilina city.
