On behalf of European Democrat Students (EDS) and Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) we cordially invite you to take part at the commemoration of the Paneuropean Picknick which took place on the 19th August 1989. At this occasion, KAS is organising in kind cooperation with EDS a conference `Opening of the Border – The path to Europe. 1989-2009` from 18-19th August 2009 in Sopron. We have the utmost pleasure to welcome during this event Chancellor Angela Merkel who will address the audience.
20 years ago, in Summer 1989 the so-called `Paneuropean Picknick` took place in Fert?rákos, not far from Sopron, a picturesque small town in Western Hungary, next to the Fert? Lake (Neusiedler See). This event has been constantly evaluated as cornerstone for the fall of the Iron Curtain and the Berlin Wall. Several hundreds of citizens of the former GDR could escape to the West. This commemoration event is intended to say thank you to the people that enabled the opening of the border.In Summer 2009, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation invites together with European Democrat Students, the City of Sopron and the Foundation Paneuropean Picknick young people aging 18-23 from allover Europe to take part at this commemoration. Mainly, the purpose is to gather youngsters who were born around the transition year 1989. The conference will be in German, with simultaneous translation in English and Hungarian. The venue is:
Liszt Ferenc Konferencia és Kulturális Központ, H-9400 Sopron, Liszt Ferenc utca 1. The Foundation is covering all costs except travel costs and accommodation. There is, however, the possibility to spend the night in one of the colleges of Sopron, for all technicalities pls. call the EDS Administrator.
